The Hermiston School District Board of Education approved Loma Vista Elementary School as the name for the to-be-built elementary school on the district’s Theater Lane property.
Loma Vista roughly translates to “Hill View”; however, the name will not be used in its translated form. The school’s official name will be Loma Vista Elementary School.
The district released an initial survey in June asking community members for their input on whether the school should be named for:
- Its location or community, or
- A famous American, or
- A local resident who has not been active with the community or schools for at least five years.
These guidelines are outlined in board policy FF-AR, found on the district’s website. With over 200 comments, respondents preferred the school to reference a geographical or environmental feature. Respondents also had the option of submitting a name suggestion for board consideration.
After further board and administration discussion, submitted names were translated into Spanish, and additional Spanish names were added to the suggestions, with the intent of best representing the Hermiston community and district student demographics.
A second input survey was released on August 12 asking the community to rank Artemisa Elementary School (Sagebrush Elementary School), Loma Vista Elementary School (Hill View Elementary School), and La Senda Elementary School (The Pathway Elementary School). With almost 600 responses, Loma Vista Elementary School was the clear leader, based on community feedback.

Una segunda encuesta de entrada fue publicada el 12 de agosto pidiéndole a la comunidad que clasificará la Escuela Primaria Artemisa (Sagebrush Elementary School), la Escuela Primaria Loma Vista (Hill View Elementary School) y la Escuela Primaria La Senda (The Pathway Elementary). Con casi 600 respuestas, la Escuela Primaria Loma Vista claramente tomó la delantera, basado en los comentarios de la comunidad.
