Public Comments and Communications

Hermiston Association of Teachers (HAT) Report
HAT President, Jonathan Robledo, shared updates regarding staff support, thoughts on InterMountain ESD, and ongoing district work. Robledo emphasized the importance of careful consideration with decisions impacting specialized support.

Some community members/educators provided comments regarding the district’s consideration of returning to the InterMountain Education Service District (IMESD). Comments reflected a variety of perspectives related to staffing, student services, communication, and long-term planning.

Presentations and Recognitions

Curriculum Development & Instructional Innovation
The board received an update on curriculum development efforts, including new social studies curriculum and elementary instructional materials. District leaders, Jerad Farley and Scott Depew, shared how teachers across grade levels are collaborating to create engaging, practical lessons aligned to student needs and focused on continuous improvement.

National Recognition for Armand Larive Broadcasting Students
Rob Doherty, ALTV advisor, recognized students in Armand Larive Middle School’s broadcasting program for earning multiple national honors at the National Student Television Network convention in Tampa, Florida. Student teams received national recognition in several categories, including a second-place national finish in the Human Interest Feature category. The accomplishments highlighted students’ creativity, teamwork, storytelling, and technical skills.

Business Report

Business Office
Katie Saul presented the March financial reports, including updates on tax collections, state school funding adjustments, spring corrections, expenditures, and projected ending fund balance. Discussion included declining interest revenue, a projected negative spring correction tied to poverty count adjustments, and the district’s plan to maintain a 10% ending fund balance.

Superintendent's Report

Superintendent Dr. Tricia Mooney presented April 30 enrollment data
Dr. Mooney reported that district enrollment stood at 5,088 students as of April 30, down 16 students from the previous month and 165 students from the same time last year. She explained that smaller incoming kindergarten classes compared to graduating senior classes are expected to continue contributing to enrollment declines.

Dr. Mooney also shared that Hermiston School District was awarded the Summer Learning Grant after initially not being selected. The funding will help support summer learning opportunities for students over the next three years.

Action Items
Social Science Curriculum Adoption Approved 
The Board unanimously approved the adoption of Teacher Curriculum Institute (TCI) social science instructional materials for grades 6–12 following staff presentations and curriculum review discussions.

Consent Agenda Approved 
The Board approved the consent agenda, including routine personnel, financial, and operational items presented for consideration.

Board Policies and Resolutions Approved 
The Board approved remaining action items and resolutions presented during the meeting agenda.
